In 2001 some friends and I drove from Estes Park, Colorado, into the Rocky Mountains National Park, all the way up to the continental divide. At the highest point of the road we spotted this sign. Does any locals know if there is some kind of competition going on with Oregon here? The sign may not even be there any more as this was 11 years ago.

ha ha. it sure sounds like some healthy altitude competition!
I bet there is a friendly bit of rivalry!
there might be a similar sign in mt hood touting it to be higher in elevation :)
Lovely picture - I have been there. It is amazing what we find in blogs. That picture brought back the memories of the trip.
Thanks.
What an odd sign by comparing to Mount Hood. Great pic.
that is funny - but it doesn't look as majestic as My Hood.
an altitude competition!:p
the view here must be breathtaking!
Signs here
i wonder what it feels up there aside from the breathtaking view of place.
a friendly rivalry i bet.

That really is too funny, and I enjoy texwisgil's "healthy altitude competition" comment.
Inger -- I have seen that sign; it was there the first time we hiked up that peak in RMNP. But the next time we went it was gone. (Our youngest son and his wife live near the Park -- we are all originally from Oregon, so they couldn't wait to show us the sign. >)
I think the thing was that it is a fairly short hill to hike there in Colorado, but because it starts so high, it makes the top higher than Mt Hood. (I could fairly easily 'climb' the peak in Colorado, but never would be able to climb Mt Hood.)
We definitely notice the altitude when we visit the kids in beautiful Colorado. (In Oregon we lived in a valley and of course Florida has no altitude at all.)
We saw it when we were staying in Estes Park, but I think it was about the same time you were there. That is such a neat spot to go to. Boy, did I get altitude sickness when I tried to walk up that hill in the park. That was NOT fun!
A place I would love to visit. Great sign.
Great sign find. It does seem odd that whoever erected the sign seems to be in specific competition with Mt. Hood, but I have no idea why.
