I think this is one of my all time favorite signs:
There is one situated in each end of a tunnel in a small rural place in Norway. I'm not talking about the big 3,8m sign. This is all about the little brown box, actually a painted mailbox. Inside there is a torch light that cyclists with insufficient light on their bikes can borrow to get them safely through the unlit tunnel. At the other end there is a similar box, to leave the torch light in, for the next cyclist.
How cool is that?

I suppose it saves on having lightbulbs burning 24 hours a day.
am glad you explained it, I was a bit confused about the symbol at first.
What a nice idea!
What a wonderful community oriented idea. I almost want to ride through there just to use the torch!
what a thoughtful idea! this could be a life-saver.

Hvor er det cool.. fantastisk god ide.. :-)
It would be a good place to exchange my worn out batteries:) By the way... just how dark is it in there?
I agree with you all, it's a great idea!
Andy: it gets pitch black in there, even in daytime, as the tunnel is curved, so in the middle you don't see either opening!
How civilized that is! I think they would all disappear here.
